About Soul Motion®

Soul Motion® is a barefoot, body-based dance practice developed by Vincent (Arjuna) Martínez-Grieco. Soul Motion is pathway to a place of consciousness, to a relaxed presence, and coming home to ourselves. By tuning into our internal teacher and cultivating awareness of the external teachers around us, our mind becomes more focused, our communication is enhanced, and relationships blossom. What happens on the dance floor is often a reflection of our everyday lives, giving us new possibilities for moving in the world and relating to others. Soul Motion classes are open to everyone, regardless of physical ability or fitness; no prior dance experience is needed.

In Soul Motion we practice movement platforms of:

Pause Presence - a meditative relaxation that allows us to slow down, check in with ourself, observe the room, and recharge before moving out into the dance again

Orbit Orientation - where we are encouraged to consciously to aware of and move in all directions (front body, back body, side body, up, down) with equal attention and without preference

Echo Inspiration - taking inspiration from others' movements, shapes in space & negative space we are invited to "try on" something new and inform our movement without mimicry

Soul Motion classes generally take three basic forms:

Mindful Movement classes begin and end sitting in silence. These periods bookend a passage of gently facilitated movement and personal expression

Odyssey classes start with time for personal warm-up, followed by an inquiry that takes the class through the landscapes of moving alone, moving with one other, moving in a group, and moving out into the everyday

Workshops use the same basic elements as classes and allow for collaborative teaching, as well as time for diving deeper into an inquiry, to linger in a movement landscape, to more fully experience ritual, and to add verbal interaction.

...and one of the things we love about Soul Motion is the spaciousness & freedom in the form...

"This logo incorporates many of the principles of Soul Motion.

"The vertical dance / dancer is clearly represented by the strong vertical line. Note she is slightly arched to not only connote movement, but to accent our connection between heaven and earth... The vertical line represents all of this, rooted in a single point of stillness. The sacred pause.

"The horizontal stroke represents the orbital, 360 degree view and motion of a Soul Motion dancer... We turn around ourselves, seeing, feeling, and touching everyone and everything, with our feet rooted in stillness. We stretch our arms, hearts, and eyes to the horizon, and gather this world to us, while offering this dance out to the larger world...

"Our dance is the prayer and promise of heaven and earth spiraling in and out of this dancer, in this moment, in this world. Never to be repeated in just this way, yet embodied and sent forth with our unique signature...

"Our dance is a simple, humble prayer emanating through us. We are the prayer and the devotee..."
